The value of reframing

The value of reframing

What story are you telling yourself about your life and who you are?  Whenever you feel stuck, or you’re not sure about your direction, it can be helpful to explore the underlying beliefs that might be creating a barrier to moving forward. You might, for example, believe you should be in a different place in your life, that you’re too old, or it’s too late to pursue a new opportunity or direction.

We can change the story we are telling ourselves by questioning and reframing our limiting and unhelpful beliefs, and create a shift that can reveal new ideas and possibilities. Try asking yourself these questions about a belief that is interfering with you moving forward.

1.     Is it true?

2.     How do you react when you believe that it’s true?

3.     Who would you be without that belief?

4.     How can you reframe that belief to support you moving forward?

You may question, for example, the truth about whether it’s too late for you to try something new, or explore a new direction or opportunity. The truth is that it’s never too late to try something new, and begin designing and building a life you will love. The reframe is that you are where you are, it’s not too late, and life is a dynamic and fluid journey.  By reframing that belief, you are ready to embrace new possibilities, and begin designing and building a life where you can thrive.

For many life design students, identifying and reframing one core limiting belief can result in a pivotal shift. If you have a belief that is holding you back, try asking yourself these questions. Maybe you can reframe that belief, gain a different perspective, and set yourself in a new direction.
